Walk through a garden and crush a lavender leaf between your fingers. Peel an orange. Brush against a sprig of rosemary. Suddenly, the air changes.
We tend to think plants smell wonderful for us. But those aromas existed long before candles, perfumes and air fresheners.
For plants, scent has a job to do.
Plants can't move from place to place, but they have developed an extraordinary chemical language for interacting with the world around them. They produce volatile aromatic compounds—tiny molecules that can evaporate into the air and travel beyond the plant itself.
Some scents help flowers attract the pollinators they need to reproduce. Others are part of a plant's defense system, helping make leaves less appealing to hungry insects. And when certain plants are attacked, their chemistry can change dramatically, releasing airborne compounds that may attract the natural enemies of the insects feeding on them.
Even neighboring plants can detect some of these chemical cues and respond.
What we experience simply as scent is part of a much bigger botanical story.
And those aromas can come from remarkably different places.
The bright burst released when you peel a citrus fruit comes from tiny oil glands in its rind. Eucalyptus stores aromatic oils within its leaves. Lavender produces its distinctive aromatic compounds in microscopic glandular structures across the plant.
Each botanical has its own chemistry, its own scent—and its own reason for producing it.
Plants didn't create fragrance for us. We simply discovered how extraordinary their chemistry smells.
